Pai Gow Poker (pronounced pi gow) combines the elements of the ancient Chinese game of Pai Gow and the American game of poker. A relatively slow-paced game, Pai Gow Poker is played with a traditional deck of 52 playing cards, plus a joker (total of 53 cards). The joker is not wild and can be used only as an Ace, or to complete any Straight or Flush.

A relatively slow-paced game (slower than Craps and Blackjack, at least), Pai Gow Poker appeals to players who prefer more leisurely games. Up to six players can play on one Pai Gow table.

The Object

The object of the game is for both of the player's two-card hand and five-card hand to rank higher than both of the Banker's two hands. Should one hand rank exactly the same as the Banker's hand, this is a tie and the Banker wins all tie hands.

In Pai Gow Poker, the highest two-card hand is two Aces, and the highest five-card hand is five Aces (four Aces plus the Joker)

Pai Gow Poker Rules-

The Pai Gow Poker deck consists of 53 cards which includes a Joker. The Joker card in Pai Gow is wild when used to complete any Straight or Flush. If used alone the Joker becomes an Ace.

For each Pai Gow Poker hand, one person (either a player or the dealer) will be designated the "banker", and all other players will compete against that person.

1 The dealer shuffles his deck and then proceeds to deal seven hands in a line in front of the dealer's tray, one card at a time, face down, until seven hands of seven cards each are dealt. The dealer then checks that exactly four cards are left over, then places those cards in the discard rack.

2Delivering the Cards: The dealer then shakes the dice cup and rolls three dice. Before the dice are uncovered, all bets must be in the betting circle. The numbers on the dice are added and the value of the three dice indicate which player receives the first set of seven cards. Starting with the banker position as "one," the dealer counts betting positions (including open seats) counter clockwise until reaching the sum of the dice. The dealer position receives the first hand. The dealer will then deliver seven cards to each spot on the table in front of each player, including the dealer and also spots with no wagers, in a clockwise rotation. In Pai Gow Poker, the Banker's position is always 1, 8 or

3 Once all the cards are distributed, the dealer will go back and collect the cards distributed to seats without a wager and place them in the discard rack.

4 Each player at the table receives seven (7) cards which they will use to construct two (2) separate poker hands of two (2) cards and five (5) cards. The one hand that contain five cards is known as the "High Hand" or "Back Hand". The other hand that contain two cards and is known as the "Second Highest Hand" or "Low Hand" or "Front Hand".

The five-card hand must be ranked higher than the two-card hand (for example, if the two-card hand were to hold a pair of sevens, the five-card hand must hold a pair of eights or better).

Once a player is satisfied with their arrangement of the low and high hands, they place them each face down in designated areas on the table layout.

Note:
Five-card "high" hand (is also known as the back hand/big hand)
Two-card "low" hand (is also known as the front hand/small hand)

Although Pai Gow may seem complicated at first, the only requirement in forming the two hands is that the "Low Hand" must contain only two cards and must be a lower ranking hand than the hand containing five cards. If this requirement is not satisfied, the hand is declared a “foul hand” and the wager is automatically forfeited.

Did you know If you need help in arranging your hand, the dealer will be happy to assist you in setting your hand according to the house way, but is not responsible for wins or losses.

5 After all players sets their hands in the designated space face down, the house dealer then turns his/her seven cards over and sets his/her hand in front of the tray face up according to the "house way."

Note:After the dealer indicates all hands are set (or reveals their face down cards), players may not touch their cards or their wager.

For example, if the player has an Ace-7 in the low hand and the dealer has an Ace-7 in the low hand, the dealer would win the low hand.

Pai Gow Poker Strategy

Strategy-wise, you should generally try to create the highest two-card hand that you can. Most times, your remaining cards will still form a higher five-card hand.

The five-card hand is called the high hand | rear hand | back hand | big hand
The two-card hand is called the low hand | front hand | small hand

If you’re dealt a pair or better, put the highest card in the five-card hand and the two second-highest cards in the two-card hand.

Play three of a kind on your five-card hand unless they’re triple aces, in which case play the high ace in the two-card hand and the other two in the five-card hand.

If you have four of a kind that are jacks or better, split them into two pairs.

Split full houses into three of a kind and a pair. If you have an extra pair, play the high pair in your front hand.

For new players, it's always best to select "House Way" when arranging your cards until you get a better feel for the strategy of the game.
